Hardwood Flooring Calculator

Estimate hardwood flooring boxes, square footage, waste allowance, ordered coverage, leftover material, underlayment rolls, and material cost.

What the hardwood flooring calculator estimates

This hardwood flooring calculator estimates how many boxes or cartons to buy for one rectangular room. It follows the common US buying workflow: measure the room in feet, add a waste allowance, divide by the square feet covered by one box, and round up to whole boxes.

    1. Enter room length and room width in feet.
    2. Use the box coverage printed on the hardwood or engineered wood carton.
    3. Choose a layout so the calculator can apply a waste allowance.
    4. Add a price per box for a quick material cost estimate.
    5. Optionally estimate underlayment rolls for floating engineered products.
    ResultMeaning
Boxes to buyWhole boxes after waste and full-box rounding.
Room areaMeasured floor area before waste.
With wasteRoom area increased by the selected layout allowance.
Ordered coverageCoverage from the full boxes you buy.
Overage after boxesExtra material left after room area and rounding.
Material costBoxes multiplied by the price per box, when entered.
This is a purchase estimate, not an installation quote. Labor, tax, delivery, adhesive, nails or staples, moisture barrier, transitions, baseboards, sanding, finishing, subfloor repair, and stairs are outside the model.

    Hardwood flooring formulas

The estimate starts with room area, applies a layout waste allowance, then rounds the purchase up to full boxes.

    A - room area, L - room length, W - room width.

    A order - waste-adjusted area, A - room area, r - waste percent.

    B - boxes to buy, A order - waste-adjusted area, C box - square feet per box.

C - material cost, B - boxes to buy, P box - price per box.

Extra coverage after rounding is normal. Keep matching material for cuts, mistakes, shade selection, and future repairs.

    Waste allowance by layout

Hardwood waste depends on layout, room shape, board selection, and how much repair stock you want to keep. The calculator uses practical defaults aligned with common contractor and retailer guidance.

    LayoutWaste usedTypical use
Straight lay10%Simple rectangular rooms with boards running parallel to a wall.
Diagonal15%Boards installed at an angle, increasing edge cuts.
Herringbone20%Pattern layout with more short cuts and sorting.
Parquet pattern18%Panel or block patterns where matching and orientation matter.
For closets, angled walls, multiple rooms, stairs, or a first-time DIY install, estimate sections separately and consider extra repair stock from the same lot.

Box coverage and US buying assumptions

Box coverage is the most important product-specific input. Hardwood, engineered hardwood, and click-lock wood products are usually sold by carton, and each carton lists its square-foot coverage.

    Coverage presetWhen to use it
20 sq ftSmaller cartons or narrow strip flooring.
    22 sq ftCommon residential cartons.
24 sq ftCommon engineered wood cartons.
    25 sq ftLarger retail cartons.
30 sq ftLarge-format or bulk cartons.
If a store shows price per square foot, still check the actual carton coverage and carton price before ordering. The purchase is rounded by box, not by an exact square-foot amount.

    Underlayment, acclimation, and installation limits

Underlayment is optional because solid nail-down hardwood, glue-down engineered wood, and floating engineered products have different assemblies. Use the manufacturer installation guide for the exact product.

    • Check acclimation requirements before installation.
    • Verify subfloor flatness and moisture before buying adhesive or fasteners.
    • Confirm radiant heat compatibility in the product instructions.
    • Order matching material from the same lot when possible.

    Estimate limits

    • The room is treated as one rectangle; alcoves, closets, bays, and angled walls need separate estimates.
    • The calculator does not create a row-by-row plank layout or optimize board direction.
    • It does not estimate individual board count when only box coverage is known.
    • Transitions, stair noses, thresholds, vents, tax, delivery, labor, finishing, and subfloor repair are outside the model.
Manufacturer installation instructions and retailer measurement services should take priority for uneven slabs, moisture-sensitive areas, commercial spaces, radiant heat, or warranty-sensitive jobs.
